Chances are you have never considered using acupuncture to treat your back pain. However, acupuncture is a very effective and efficient remedy for back pain. For thousands of years the Chinese have used acupuncture to treat all types of back pain. You may be surprised at the results.

Acupuncture can successfully treat the following types of back pain:

  • Acute
  • Chronic
  • Sciatic
  • Upper back & shoulders
  • Lower back
  • Neuropathic (nerve)
  • Muscular tension
  • Sports injuries
  • Muscle spasms

What is involved in a treatment?

Dr Kirk Wilson (PhD) at Meridian Healing Centre Sydney offers a detailed treatment protocol for back pain. This is designed to reduce the amount of treatment required to achieve a therapeutic outcome. Each treatment includes, acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping and massage to the affected area.

Initial massage

The treatment starts with Kirk palpating and massaging your back to determine which areas require treatment. This ensures the treatment is applied where it is needed. It is often the case with back pain that patients are unaware of from where the pain is generated or how much of the back is affected.

Once Kirk assesses your back, he then administers the acupuncture treatment. The needles remain in situ for about 25 minutes. When applied to the back, acupuncture is not painful even for those who are sensitive or afraid of needles.

During the acupuncture treatment, Kirk heats each of the acupuncture needles using a process called moxibustion. This is a treatment technique which involves burning a Chinese herb to heat up the acupuncture needles as well as the skin surrounding the acupoint. The purpose of moxibustion is to relieve pain and promote circulation.

After the acupuncture needles are removed, Kirk then applies cupping therapy. Cupping involves using glass suction cups to the affected area of your back. The purpose of cupping is to bring blood into the muscle to assist the healing process. Cupping is painless but it can leave mild bruising. Let Kirk know if you would prefer to omit it from your treatment.

Closing Massage

To conclude the treatment, Kirk provides a final massage to the affected area using a hot liniment.

How many treatments are required?

Compared to other health modalities, acupuncture is able to treat back pain in fewer treatments. This is even true for health modalities which “specialise” in back pain. Kirk Wilson has developed his back pain treatment protocols to ensure a timely therapeutic outcome to save his patients much time and money.
Acute pain or short term pain may take as little as one treatment. Kirk recommends a second treatment only if the pain is still present in three days. Less than 10% of those who suffer acute pain require a second treatment.

Sciatic pain or other chronic pain (which has been present for a period of weeks) will take two treatments to get the pain under control. Depending on the cause of the pain, further maintenance treatments may be required.

Kirk Wilson maintains high ethical standards and treatments will only be supplied if he believes they will be of therapeutic benefit. When you attend Meridian Healing Centre for acupuncture you can relax knowing there will be no pressure to lock you into long term contracts.
