What is Sinusitis?

Sinusitis is simply an infection or inflammation of the sinuses. The main purpose of the sinus is to warm inhaled air before it reaches the lungs. The sinuses are located in the cheeks, forehead and behind the eyes.

What Causes Sinusitis?

The sinuses are lined with mucus producing cells which are designed to trap pollutants such a dirt from entering the lungs.  This works to reduce the chance of lung infections. Sinusitis occurs when too much mucus is produced or the lining in the sinus becomes swollen. There are a number of factors which may cause these responses. They include: cold air; allergens; bacteria; or any foreign body which irritates the lining.

What Are The Symptoms Of Sinusitis?

Sinusitis usually involves a feeling pressure in the face which is more pronounced when leaning forward. The pain can radiate further down to affect the teeth and the upper jaw. Alternatively, the pain can also take on the form of a headache or the face feeling swollen. In most instances the nose is blocked with yellow or green mucus. Other symptoms of sinusitis include a persistent cough and a loss of smell and taste.
